Penfolds decision to add a chardonnay to its Bin line-up was inspiring.
Last year's debut 2005 Bin 311 Tumbarumba Chardonnay was a beauty. This year's is even better.Released in tandem with the iconic Penfolds line-up, the 2006 vintage is a rose among some bold reds. It's a classic cool-climate chardy singing with vibrant green apple and grapefruit flavours, zingy acidity and a crisp, clean finish. The new reds, headed by the 389 cabernet shiraz, are further confirmation that the 2004 vintage is destined to be one of the best in recent years."The 2004 vintage produced fruit with definition, clarity and profound structural tightness and grip," Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said. The full Bin range, released this month, comprises the 2004 Bin 28 (Kalimna Shiraz); 2004 Bin 128 (Coonawarra Shiraz); 2005 Bin 128 (Coonawarra Shiraz); 2004 Bin 389 (Cabernet Shiraz); 2004 Bin 407 (Cabernet Sauvignon); 2005 Bin 138 (Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre) and the 2006 Bin 311 (Tumbarumba Chardonnay).
